Chimney Sweep & Inspection

Creosote and soot buildup is the #1 cause of chimney fires in Massachusetts — and it only takes 1/8" to be considered hazardous. We sweep, inspect, and document so you can burn through winter with confidence.

Equipment

What we bring to the job

Professional-grade tools matter — they decide whether your space gets surface-cleaned or actually restored. Here's the gear we use on every chimney sweep & inspection job.

Rotary Power Sweeping System
Flexible rotating rods with nylon/poly brushes sized for your flue — removes creosote, soot, and glaze without damaging the liner.
HEPA Vacuum w/ Pre-Filter
Soot is fine enough to pass through standard filters. Our HEPA-rated vacuum captures everything at the fireplace opening so your living room stays clean.
CSIA-Style Video Inspection Camera
Flexible chimney camera records the full flue from smoke shelf to cap — we find cracks, missing mortar, and damaged liners before they become a fire or CO risk.
Chimney Caps + Smoke Shelf Brushes
Specialty brushes for the crown, smoke chamber, and smoke shelf — the hardest places to reach and where most glaze forms.
Creosote Remover (Spray or Log)
For Stage 2/3 glazed creosote, we apply modifier treatments between sweepings that convert hard glaze into brushable residue.
Drop Cloths + Work Protection
Floor, hearth, and furniture covered. No soot fingerprints, no cleanup on your end — we leave it the way we found it.
Process

How we do it

Same six-step process every time, so you know exactly what to expect.

  1. 1
    Level 1 inspection
We visually check the accessible parts of the chimney, firebox, and flue to confirm a normal sweep is all that is needed.
  2. 2
    Set up dust control
Drop cloths, HEPA vacuum at the hearth, negative pressure at the fireplace opening. Soot stays in the chimney.
  3. 3
    Rotary sweep from bottom up
Rotating nylon/poly brushes remove creosote and soot from flue walls without scoring the liner.
  4. 4
    Smoke shelf + firebox clean
The smoke shelf above the damper is where most debris collects. We vacuum it out by hand.
  5. 5
    Video inspection
Full-length flue video documented — you see exactly what the inside of your chimney looks like post-sweep.
  6. 6
    Written report + recommendations
Photo report of flue condition, any issues found, and honest guidance on repair vs. replace. No upselling.

FAQ

Questions we get

How often should my chimney be swept?

Annually, before heating season (ideally September–October). Wood-burners who use the fireplace often may need a mid-season sweep; occasional users can sometimes go 18 months.

Do you do gas fireplaces too?

Yes. Gas produces less creosote but still needs annual inspection for venting integrity, CO risk, and debris (bird nests, spider webs) that block airflow.

What if you find a liner crack?

We document it with video, explain severity, and give honest guidance. Minor issues can often wait; active safety concerns we flag immediately with written recommendations.

Do you clean the outside too?

Cap, crown, and visible masonry are part of the inspection. Full exterior masonry repointing is a separate service scoped after the inspection.
